1. How long have you lived in the L’Anse Creuse Community?

I have been a Chesterfield Twp. Resident for 12 years.

2. Why are you running for the board?

Over the past year I have talked to many students, parents and community members about how our district can improve. As an educator, parent of an elementary student, and the wife of a Middle School East teacher, I will bring a unique perspective to our board. A perspective that will help drive positive change. L’Anse Creuse is an excellent district, but there is always room for improvement.

3. Have you ever served in the community in a volunteer capacity? If so, please explain.

I volunteer annually at the L’Anse Creuse High School “Save the Manatee 5k”. I also volunteer at Gleaners Community Food Bank in Detroit.

If married, your spouse’s name:

Gary Malburg, teacher at Middle School East

Do you have children? If so, names and ages.

Yes. Our daughter is a second grader at Higgins Elementary.

Most recent job (including special qualifications that would translate to the Board of Education):

Highly organized, disciplined and efficient, I teach approximately 700 students each week. I am a master at working within a budget in order to give my students the most rewarding Art experience possible. During my 15 years in East China Schools I have fundraised thousands of dollars for my Art programs.

I serve on the East China School District’s Social Studies Committee. I am also the Co-Chair of the Eddy Elementary School Improvement Team and Co-chair of the Behavior Committee.

5. What are your personal goals as a board member?

*Eliminating wasteful spending and maintaining a conservative budget without sacrificing quality programs.

*Televising board meetings. Posting district budgets, spending and contracts online.

*Reevaluating relying on “Schools of Choice” as a funding alternative.

6. What do you see as areas of focus for the district during the next four years?

Fiscal Responsibility: Cutting wasteful spending, before we cut programs and people that work directly with our students.

Transparency: Televising Board meetings so that our entire community can be better informed. Posting budgets, spending and contracts online so that our community members can be confident that there is real accountability in our district.

Community: Educating the whole child benefits our community. Giving students more opportunities to learn valuable life skills at an earlier age through activities that inspire creativity, teach problem solving skills and teamwork.
